HONG KONG, March 05, 2011 (Press-News.org) Emerging Markets Direct (EMD) released their latest Thailand Steel Industry Report 1H11. Thailand is one of the largest producers and consumers in South East Asia. Backed by the vigorous activities in construction, automotive and electrical appliances segments, demand for steel in Thailand was likely to grow from 10 million tons to 12 million tons in 2010 according to the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand.
It was not surprising to see the adverse impact of global economic crisis. In Thailand, total production volume of selected steel products (round bar steel, knuckle bar steel, steel wire, high strength steel wire, tube steel pipe, and galvanized sheets)was down by 26.26% to 1.90 million metric tons in 2009. 2010 saw improvements in the production index where the number shot up by 11.0% y-o-y.
Exports and imports conditions of Iron and Steel products were recovering in 2010. According to our Thailand Steel Industry Report, exports rose to THB12.45 million in the first 11 months of 2010, rendering an increase of 38.92% comparing with the corresponding period in 2009. Imports was totaled at THB141.45 billion in 2009 and bounced back to THB199.92 just for the period between January and November 2010.
The rebounce in manufacturing sector give a push to the Thailand Steel Industry (http://www.emergingmarketsdirect.com/products/Thailand-Steel-Industry-.html). ISIT revealed that steel consumption in Thailand went up by 74.4% y-o-y in the first half of 2010, with flat products accounting for two thirds of total steel consumption.
Our analysts think that steel prices are expected to increase by 5-10% owing to the cost pressure from strong increase in iron ore and coking coal prices. With iron ore prices likely to rise to USD140-150/ton(FOB) and the new coking coal contract price at USD225/ton, blast furnace steelmaking cost was expected to increase to USD595/ton.
Thai government called for investments in the Steel Industry and emphasized the need especially in the northern mountain province of Thai Nguyen. Other Investments in Thailand include Mill Con Steel Industries planning to invest up to THB2.9 billion in a melting shop and TATA Steel Thailand started its mini blast furnace plant in Chonburi etc.
What are the on-going investments projects? What are the anti-dumping tariffs set by Thai government? How do China's exports affect the Thailand Steel Industry? Want to see the market outlook and trends of industry?
