HONOLULU, HI, March 10, 2011 (Press-News.org) A health crisis commonly provokes fear, worry, and a sense of personal limitation. Occasionally it elicits unusual resolve, determination, and abilities the sufferer didn't know he or she had.
Jim Currie's "In Dire Straits: Keeping Spirit Alive when the Wheels Come Off" is an inspirational healing memoir about the challenges of coping with and recovering from an incapacitating rheumatoid disease. Told from the perspective of a solo world traveler, it reads like a travel book, full of edifying adventures with quirky discoveries along the way. Each encounter prompts reflection on self-empowerment through greater mindfulness, curiosity, and imagination.
"In the midst of a healing crisis," Currie writes, "it's always convenient and usually distorted to believe that you are alone and powerless."
The book also links personal and planetary healing, showing similarities in the way systems function, break down and recover. It also offers provocative suggestions about maintaining spiritual balance when chaos abounds and systems are on tilt.
Jim Currie is a Seattle writer and ecologist whose credits include works of fiction, non-fiction, and over twenty publications on natural resource management and biology. He holds an honors degree from Harvard and a masters from Berkeley. His writing and teaching reflect an interdisciplinary perspective and wide-ranging curiosity in the arts, science, humanities, and philosophy. His published titles include "The Mindful Traveler: A Guide to Journaling and Transformative Travel" (Open Court, 2000). His work in the environmental field includes innovative ways to protect water quality and habitat. His teaching and lecturing draws upon integral psychology and Eastern philosophy. Jim writes extensively on ecology, conservation, and sustainable economy. His web-based organization, SydneysThumb.com, includes members from across the globe and is dedicated to climate action, species rescue, and travel that leaves shallow footprints.
