EATONTOWN, NJ, March 25, 2011 (Press-News.org) Revised numbers from the Department of Labor indicate that New Jersey gained 5,200 private-sector jobs last year while losing 7,100 jobs in January. With state unemployment remaining at 9.1%, trends indicate that the economy will continue to challenge employers throughout 2011. Snelling Staffing - The Wyckoff Group, a staffing organization that works with local hiring managers, reports that as businesses slowly bring on new employees, their hiring process needs to reflect the current economic situation.
"A slow-moving economy is the most challenging time to hire," says Frank Wyckoff, President of Snelling Staffing - The Wyckoff Group, headquartered in Eatontown. "While employers are gradually becoming more confident in their ability to hire, they still need to be cautious about who they hire."
Wyckoff explains that productivity has increased just enough that employers need help addressing demand. However, business is too delicate to absorb the costs of a wrong hire. Wyckoff shares the following four points on how hiring authorities can refocus their process to find the right match for the job:
Be specific and clear from the get-go - If you give a vague job description, a lot of under-qualified candidates are going to apply for the position. List specific requirements that demonstrate you're looking for a particular type of candidate. Use strong language such as "mandatory" and "required" to make it clear your pre-requisites aren't negotiable.
Concentrate on skills instead of industry - After you've collected resumes, first look at candidates' capabilities as opposed to the fields in which they've worked. It's easier to teach your next employee a new industry than a new range of skills.
Focus on core values - Employees with good character bring out the best in others. During the interview, tailor questions to gauge what type of person your candidate tends to be.
Test for versatility - Employees who can serve multiple functions tend to understand how the company works as a whole. Direct your interview questions to see if the candidate can assist different departments and wear many hats.
"The worst thing you can do is hire someone who is just not bad enough to fire," adds Wyckoff. "Not only must other people pick up the slack, but it compromises the culture you're trying to build."
