LAKELAND, FL, May 04, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Burnetti Children's Foundation sponsored swan boat is the winner of the 4th Annual Lakeland Derby.
The Derby, an annual fundraising event for the Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, a non-profit organization that provides free medical care to the working uninsured of Polk County, featured 10 boats competing in the main event.
Spectators wearing swan-themed hats lined the shores of Lake Mirror as the swan Whirlaway, crewed by Chris Barker and Nathan Amann, sailed into first place on April 30, 2011.
"We're thrilled that our crew steered us to a first place victory," said Doug Burnetti, founder of Burnetti Children's Foundation. "Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine is a wonderful philanthropic organization, and we're proud to be a part of this annual fundraiser whose proceeds benefit the health needs of our community."
This is the first time Whirlaway has captured the trophy; in 2009 and 2010, crews jockeyed to third place positions, narrowly missing the win.
