They soon find out that this is no easy task, and that survival itself is fleeting.

The book begins in small town America and tells the story of the main character, Nadene, along with her mother, a homeless man, a police officer, and a dispatcher, as well as the revolving stories of Nadene's best friend Sally and her family during a time of unheard of upheaval and chaos in the United States.
