Metro Health Hospital has named Dr. Brad Irving, D.O., its 2011 Nursing Chosen Physician of the Year.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI, June 09, 2011

Metro Health Hospital has named Dr. Brad Irving, D.O., its 2011 Nursing Chosen Physician of the Year.

The award is given annually by Metro Health's Professional Nursing Council to recognize a physician who exemplifies best practices and who also supports the role of nurses as part of the healthcare team. The hospital's clinical nursing staff proposes candidates, and nominations are reviewed by the 12-member PNC, with the recipient selected by secret ballot.

Irving specializes in obstetrics and gynecology and practices at Michigan OB-GYN PC in the Metro Health Village. His nomination form noted: "Many of his patients mention that they appreciate his hugs at every prenatal visit, and that they feel extremely safe under his care. He makes them laugh and makes them feel comfortable and confident. He listens and respects the patient evaluation and assessment of the nurses and takes these things into account during the management of his patients.

"He puts his patients, their babies and their care first. He does not practice for his own convenience, nor does he practice by frequent intervention, nor aggressive care. He is gentle. He listens to his patients' desires for their labor and delivery and respects them. This physician is 100 percent about delivering quality patient care where the patient is the focus and is a direct partner in their own care. He is a beacon of Metro's Best Practice Standards."

A native of the Grand Rapids area, Irving received his undergraduate degree from Hope College in Holland, then completed medical school in Phoenix in 2004. He completed his residency at Metro Health Hospital. He has participated in several community education opportunities including, hosting informational lectures at Metro Health, publishing articles and traveling with medical mission trips to provide services.
