Shannon Heiling of Coastal Kids Dental & Braces Recently Returned From a Medical Mission to Badplaas, South Africa
2011-06-15
CHARLESTON, SC, June 15, 2011 (Press-News.org) Shannon Heiling, Office Manager of Coastal Kids Dental & Braces, recently returned from a medical mission trip to Badplaas, South Africa. Shannon was able to share a small piece of Coastal Kids with the patients that were seen! Coastal Kids donated over 150 toothbrushes and containers of toothpaste to be handed out to each patient that was treated in the dental clinic.

While serving in Badplaas, the medical mission team was able to treat over 950 patients in clinic. Patients were provided with the chance to meet with medical providers, a dentist, and an occupational therapist, as well as receive glasses and medications through a pharmacy. Shannon had the pleasure of working in various roles throughout the week, including assisting the dentist in extractions, diagnosing and treating conditions alongside a Physician Assistant, triaging patients, dispersing glasses in the ophthalmology clinic and, of course, loving on the beautiful children of Badplaas!

"The mission was an absolutely amazing experience," says Shannon. "When I spoke to Dr. Isabel about going on the trip, she instantly stated she wanted to support us by donating items. It was a special moment to be able to see the smiles on the children's faces when receiving a toothbrush. The patients were very grateful and appreciative. Although we were able to provide medical care and supplies to the residents, we took away so much more then we could ever give them. I'll forever be touched by the experience and look forward to returning next year, with more children's toothbrushes in tow!"
