Country's Leading Internet Security Experts Spoke on Cybercrime at ISSA LA Third Annual Information Security Summit

Twenty-two of the country's leading experts on Internet security spoke on protecting businesses from cybercrime and hackers at the Los Angeles Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association Third Annual Information Security Summit

LOS ANGELES, CA, June 19, 2011 (Press-News.org) Twenty-two of the country's leading experts on Internet security spoke at the Los Angeles Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA-LA) third annual Information Security Summit. The theme of this year's Summit was The Growing Cyber Threat: Protect Your Business. More than 380 people attended the event on the University of California Los Angeles campus, and it was hosted by UCLA Extension.

"Cybercrime is rampant. This is open season for hackers. There has been an explosive growth in cybercrime, just within the last two weeks," said ISSA-LA President Stan Stahl, Ph.D. "Yesterday's defenses don't work against the worst of today's cyber-attacks. The Summit's mission is what businesses, nonprofits and other organizations must do to stay ahead of the cybercriminals."

The keynote speakers were Marc Maiffret, Chief Technology Officer at eEye Digital Security, and Steve Lipner, Director of Security Assurance at Microsoft. A special keynote address was delivered by Carl Terzian, chairman of Carl Terzian Associates, who addressed practical privacy considerations when engaging in business and social networking on the Internet.

Mr. Maiffret is an industry expert in network security who has testified before the United States Congress on national cyber security and critical infrastructure protection. He has been interviewed on CNN numerous times and has been featured in Details, the Los Angeles Times, Entrepreneur Inc. and USA Today. Mr. Maiffret discovered the first Microsoft computer worm, "CodeRed" and was named one of People Magazine's 30 People Under 30.

Mr. Lipner is senior director of Security Engineering Strategy at Microsoft Corp where leads Microsoft's Security Development Lifecycle team. Mr. Lipner is co-author with Michael Howard of The Security Development Lifecycle, is an inventor and holds several patents, has authored numerous professional papers and served on several National Research Council committees. Mr. Lipner holds several degrees in Civil Engineering from MIT.

Other speakers included Cassio Goldschmidt, Senior Manager of product security at Symantec Corp.; Ariel Silverstone, Chief Information Security Officer AT Expedia; Jeremiah Grossman, CTO of WhiteHat Security; Gary McGraw, CTO of Cigital, Inc.; John Steven, Senior Director, Advanced Technology Consulting at Cigital, Inc.; Francoise Gilbert, Founder and Partner of IT Law Group; Tin Zaw, Senior Technical Architect with AT&T's Chief Technology Officer; Miguel (Mike) O. Villegas, Director of Information Security at Newegg, Inc.; Jennifer Terrill, Vice-President of Information Technology at Frederick's of Hollywood, Inc.; and Stan Stahl, President of Citadel Information Group.

The annual Summit is the only educational forum in Los Angeles specifically designed to encourage participation and interaction among all three vital information security constituencies: (1) business executives, senior business managers, and their trusted advisors; (2) technical IT personnel with responsibility for information systems and the data they contain; and (3) information security practitioners with responsibility for ensuring the security of sensitive information.
