IRISH HILLS, MI, July 01, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Walker Tavern Wheels, a Michigan-based vintage baseball team, will begin their home games of the season in July at the Walker Tavern Historic Site in Brooklyn, Michigan. The team is named after the Walker Tavern, a state historic landmark and stagecoach inn in Michigan's Irish
Hills managed by Michigan's Department of Natural Resources.
The team's first home game is on Saturday, July 9 at 1 p.m. The Wheels will defend the home turf against the Paw Paw Corkers. The team's home playing field is on the facility grounds at 13220 M-50 Highway (at the intersection of U.S. 12) in Brooklyn, Michigan. The grounds also feature museum exhibits and an outdoor Farmer's Market on Sundays during the summer.
The 2011 season features an all-new event called the Toledo War Program on Saturday, July 23 at 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Walker Tavern. The event will revisit the 1835 Toledo War between Michigan and Ohio, which was over a strip of land that now includes Toledo.
During the re-enactment, the dispute will be settled by a debate and vintage baseball game between the Wheels and Inmates of Wood County (Ohio). The winning team will take home the all-new Toledo War Pig Trophy, because a pig was the only casualty of the Toledo War.
The Walker Tavern Wheels also have home games on July 24 (2 p.m. against Hartwick Pines), July 31 (2 p.m. against Haven Hill Barnstormers), August 28 (2 p.m. against Great Swamp Frogs), and September 11 (Noon against Northville Eclipse).
The 2011 Walker Tavern Wheels players include Nate "Bullet" Brown, Tim "Buck Shot" Brown, Nate "Possum" Drake (team co-captain), Tom "The Bomb" Drake, Jeff "The General" Lee, Ray "Rainman" Reetz, Serge "Fence Post" Rigel, Carl "Doc" Szumlanski, Jim "Crazy Legs" Terwilliger (team co-captain), Matt "Skippy" Thomas, and Joe "Cuppa Joe" Tomassi. Returning as bat boy for a second season is Jake "The Snake" Szumlanski.
Vintage baseball is not only a competitive game but a tribute to the sport, similar to an American Civil War reenactment. This version of the sport is considered a true gentlemen's game without swearing, sliding or spitting. The game is played without any sort of gloves. The game is played much like today's game with a few minor changes. The Wheels' uniforms - gray and green with a distinctive 'W' emblem -- are custom-made by Joyce Drake a community seamstress who is skilled in 1800s era clothing design.
Sponsors for the Wheels include the Friends of Walker Tavern and local area merchants.
For more information about the Walker Wheels and the Historic Walker Tavern, visit the team's Facebook Fan page or official website hosted by the State of Michigan.
