BUFFALO, NY, July 02, 2011 (Press-News.org) After having fought against a malicious military government in Burma, a Karen man named Smiler Greely was selected for resettlement in Buffalo New York through the United Nations refugee program along with his wife and three children. Greely and his family spent over 20 years in a refugee camp before being chosen to live in one of the most poverty stricken areas of the United States.
Refugees are defined under international law as being outside their home country and having a
well founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
The number of forcibly displaced people around the world has reached a 15-year high, according to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). According to the UNHCR's 2010 trends report, an estimated 43.7 million refugees and people were displaced within their country last year by events such as war and natural disasters. Over half of the total were children.
A recent Burma documentary entitled Nickel City Smiler has documented the entire struggle which Greely' s family as well as the refugee community encounter on the streets in one of America's poorest cities. This movie is intended to educate the general public on the fight against poverty in America, as well as on the violence and bureaucracy that refugees face every day. The leadership that Smiler faces and the adversity that this family endures inspires viewers with the hope and determination needed for a better future.
