Ciena Healthcare Announces Opening of Cardiac Rehab Unit at its Hartford Nursing Community

$1 Million Investment to Combine Complex Medical Care with Cardiac Education

2010-09-18
SOUTHFIELD, MI, September 18, 2010 (Press-News.org) Ciena Healthcare Management, the largest privately owned manager and operator of skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in Michigan, announces the opening of its new $1 million Cardiac Rehab Unit at the Hartford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Detroit. The announcement was made by Ciena Healthcare President Mohammad Qazi.
The Cardiac Rehab Unit, the first specialty unit in Detroit to focus exclusively on cardiac care, is housed on the newly renovated third floor of Ciena's Hartford community and consists of 12 beds and an exercise area, all within a 5,723 square foot space. The unit will combine comprehensive care with patient education, and focus on patients recovering from heart surgeries, heart attacks and other cardiac disorders. This will include a rehabilitation program including highly supervised exercise, education and nutritional information. Psychological and pharmacological counseling will be provided, along with a daily medical evaluation by a designated physician.
"At Ciena Healthcare, we are committed to being at the forefront of innovative programs and high quality care for our residents, and the leader in providing healthcare services important to the communities we serve," said Qazi. "Our goal is to expand specialty units such as this to other Ciena communities where there is a need and where we can make a positive difference."
The Cardiac Rehab Unit at Hartford aims to address the critically important need for properly trained and skilled staff to deliver the most advanced care and information to cardiac patients, while also reducing hospital readmissions, as mandated by the STAAR initiative.
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) launched the State Action on Avoidable Rehospitalizations (STAAR) initiative in May 2009 as a multi-state, multi-stakeholder approach to reduce rehospitalizations and improve the delivery of care at a regional scale. The program has been launched in Michigan, Massachusetts and Washington.
Ciena Healthcare is collaborating clinically with Detroit's Sinai Grace Hospital in an innovative pilot program to provide staff training, patient educational materials and other resources for the Cardiac Rehab Unit.

"The need for this specialty unit is great, as cardiac patients are most at risk for hospital readmissions," said Mary Hoskins, Administrator, Hartford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. "Hartford's Cardiac Rehab Unit will provide a comprehensive care program to those recovering from heart ailments with high quality care in a new setting. With the latest in rehabilitation treatments and a well trained staff, our goal is to help patients return to their optimal state of health and go back home, rather than back to a hospital."
