CHAPEL HILL, NC, September 02, 2011 (Press-News.org) Rockwell put it best in 1984 when he sang "Somebody's watching me." Collegiate athletes must learn quickly to adjust to this line of thinking as the murky anonymity of normal college life is floodlit by the NCAA. These students become ambassadors of their respective universities, role models to their fellow classmates, local celebrities; and they are always being watched. Sharon Hill, a Triangle-based professional business etiquette and diversity trainer, has been invited by Saint Augustine's College and Winston Salem State University to present her "Pump up the Professionalism" presentation to their student athletes. She will present at Saint Augustine's Selby Jones Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on September 12th and Winston Salem State's Dillard Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on September 15th to give the student athletes of both schools a competitive advantage over peers and fellow NCAA athletes that will benefit both the students and their institutions.
Tonia Walker, Associate Director of Athletics for WSSU, recognizes the value Sharon Hill will add to the university: "Our student athletes have a unique opportunity and responsibility above their classmates to visibly uphold the University's values. 'Leadership is demonstrated through the relentless pursuit of excellence,' is a stated value that our athletes must embody at all times. Ms. Hill will empower our athletes to do this with confidence." Kristene Kelly, Associate Director at Saint Augustine's, adds, "Saint Augustine's is our students and the students are Saint Augustine's. This simple truth is the reason we need to implement standards of image for our student athletes' to uphold and pass on."
Student athletes do not have the luxury of a four-year discovery to become well-rounded, polished individuals. They need a crash course, an explanation of the do's and don'ts; this is where Sharon Hill comes into the picture. Ms. Hill has one strong point to impress upon the Falcons and Rams: "YOU ARE ALWAYS BEING WATCHED. Many students find their comfort zone in dressing, talking and acting like their peers. But when they step outside of that zone, they must realize people are judging them and making snap decisions about the student's professionalism, confidence, and poise." Ms. Hill continues, "Students have an 'edge' by being made aware of how to carry themselves, talk with people, make eye contact, shake hands and dress for success. Bottom line: A polished image and etiquette play an important part in one's success."
Sharon Hill entrances her audiences with the voice of charm, humor and most importantly, experience. Ms. Hill spent more than 20 years as development and marketing manager at Fortune 500 giant IBM before founding her current venture, Sharon Hill International. She frequently teaches seminars focusing on American business etiquette, diversity practices, effective speaking techniques, and preparing students for corporate America. Ms. Hill is the author of 5 books including 35 Tips for Students to Succeed in Corporate America and Don't be and Ugly Duckling at the Peacock Party.
