WAUNAKEE, WI, September 29, 2010

A block of the month quilting club from Mill House Quilts of Waunakee WI was recently accepted to show a grouping of 18 quilts as a special display at the Quilt Expo in Madison, WI, hosted by Wisconsin Public Television. and Nancy Zieman Productions. All quilts were made based on a single pattern called "Pieceful Nights" designed by Lori Smith. The display was particularly exciting because it showed the tremendous variations based on fabric choice, color choice and combinations and the final quilting of the fabrics, but all based on a single pattern.

The club, hosted by Mill House Quilts, culminated a year of work by participants in the block-of-the month club. Of approximately 25 participants who started the pattern, eighteen completed their project and submitted their collective work to Quilt Expo. The quilt club consisted primarily of seasoned and dedicated quilters. The pattern itself is particularly challenging because it outlines what needs to be done, but not necessarily how to do it. The real fun came when club members tried all sorts of color combinations. This challenge was taken in stride.. Dianne Larson, co-owner of Mill House Quilts said that "The challenges made it a growing experience for everyone." At the beginning, there was no thought of exhibiting the quilts, however as the year progressed, the participants were fascinated by the variations in their quilts and wanted to show others their experiment. Larson suggested that they submit photos of their collection to Quilt Expo, and they were very pleased to be accepted.

Mill House Quilts is a quilting supply shop in Waunakee, WI, established in 1995. It is housed in a restored feed mill which was built in 1875. The building is a perfect place for a quilt shop. It has great spaces for quilting classes and clubs. Mill House Quilts hosts over 100 classes per year, and 12 monthly ongoing clubs. The clubs are based on special interests, such as the Civil War, block of the month, UFO (Unfinished Object) club, applique, scrap, and EQ (Electric Quilt(R) clubs. This is an unusual number of quilting clubs for a small town such as Waunakee. Many of the participants are in several clubs. Several travel up to an hour to get to Mill House for the meetings. Although there are no instructors for the clubs, each has a club leader to help coordinate and direct the activities.

The "Pieceful Nights" exhibit will again be shown at the St. John's Quilt show in Waunakee, WI on October 29-30, 2010.
