HOLIDAY, FL, May 17, 2012 (Press-News.org) Lance Corporal Justin Gaertner lost his legs on the day after Thanksgiving in 2010 while defending his country's freedom. On Memorial Day, Sun Toyota is hoping to restore some of his mobility by putting him behind the wheel of his very own 2012 Toyota Tundra.
The morning of Monday, May 28, the Florida Patriot Guard Riders will provide Gaertner with a special escort to the Sun Toyota dealership at 3001 US Highway 19 in Holiday, Florida. There, he will receive the keys to his 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax Limited 4x4 full-size pickup truck.
Monday's truck giveaway will cap an entire weekend of fun and activities at Sun Toyota. There will be food, prizes, a climbing wall, face painting and displays from the Pasco County Fire Department and Sheriff's Office. Every branch of the military will also be present to show their support.
Equipped with hand controls and step bars, the specially-outfitted Toyota Tundra has been designed so that Gaertner can operate it with ease. He walks with the aid of two prosthetic legs.
Throughout his recovery and rehabilitation, Gaertner astounded everyone with his work ethic and the progress he made. Initially, he thought it would be a year until he could walk again. He was back on his feet within four months.
Sun Toyota has been raising money on behalf of Gaertner since last month's Fun n' Sun Toyota Country Concert. The dealership printed t-shirts and gave them away in exchange for donations. Customers and local supporters have also been donating money on Sun Toyota's Facebook page, where Gaertner's mother expressed her appreciation for the efforts.
