CHICAGO, IL, June 08, 2012 (Press-News.org) Transgender African American actress Angelica Ross' first love is music. When she is not speaking words of encouragement on college campuses regarding bullying and GLBT rights, you can find Miss Ross in a recording studio. Whether it's the radio studio where she hosts a talk show, or her high-tech home studio where she creates beautiful music...you can find her in a studio.
After being selected for the lead in the movie based on the memoir of Toni Newman's new book, "I Rise", winner of numerous literary awards, Miss Ross began to write songs inspired by the screenplay. "Toni's story touched my heart, and I so get it!" Angelica exclaimed. The new movie, "The Heart of a Woman" is an opportunity for "girls like us"* to be seen on the big screen, something that does not happen very often. I am so excited to have this opportunity!
Just as Whitney Houston was the voice of "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, Angelica will lend her signature sound to "The Heart of a Woman" soundtrack. Songs "Be Strong" and "From Where You Are" are some of the singles soon to be released.
Angelica Ross is meeting with British director Keith Holland and the screenplay writers Toni Newman, Alton Demore, and George Saunders in Los Angeles this week for a listening session of new music.
This is the first time an African American transgender woman will play the lead in a movie based on a true story. "It's a great opportunity for GLBT people and I hope Hollywood will see this as a door opener to other GLBT thespians and more opportunities", states Miss Ross.
*"#girls like us" is a movement created by writer, advocate, and entertainment editor Janet Mock which supports transgender women on a global level.
