BOSTON, MA, October 01, 2010 (Press-News.org) Aspiring furniture makers, bookbinders, jewelry makers, carpenters - and those merely curious about the process of making exquisite things by hand - are invited to a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at one of the America's oldest schools of craftsmanship during a special open house at the North Bennet Street School (www.nbss.edu) in Boston's North End.
The event is Friday, November 5, 10am to 2pm and Saturday, November 6, 10am to 3pm. Admission is free.
Visitors are invited to watch and interact with students and instructors at work in eight areas of concentration - from violin making and handmade cabinetry to piano restoration and locksmithing. A free shuttle bus on Friday will provide rides to the school's Arlington, MA campus to view the carpentry and preservation carpentry training programs in action.
Serious amateurs seeking short workshop courses, as well as aspiring artisans considering full-time employment will find this annual fall tradition an informative - even inspiring - look at the school's working studios and training methods.
Visitors are also invited to view and purchase the finished work of students and alumni in the school's Gallery Store on the ground floor.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of this fully accredited, post-secondary crafts academy. The school is internationally renowned for excellence in teaching, and for its role in promoting the preservation of traditional craftsmanship.
The school is located at 39 North Bennet Street, at the corner of North Bennet and Salem Streets, in Boston's North End. The event can be reached by public transportation (Orange line via Haymarket; Green line via Haymarket or North Station).
