MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, July 04, 2012 (Press-News.org) The York Mystery Plays are a must-see attraction for people wishing to find out more about the city's cultural heritage.
Tracing the story of God and mankind from the Creation to the Last Judgment, this medieval cycle of plays has been studied, performed and reinterpreted by the people of York for centuries.
This summer, the cycle will be staged in a purpose-built auditorium located at York's Museum Gardens.
With the auditorium capable of holding 1,400 people and St Mary's Abbey providing a spectacular backdrop, the organisers have promised to deliver a memorable production.
The plays will also feature a TV star among the cast, as former Coronation Street villain Graeme Hawley has signed up to play the Devil. Hawley is best known for his portrayal of murderous former teacher John Stape in the ITV1 soap.
"I am used to playing bad guys and they don't get much bigger than the devil!" the actor said when he was added to the cast.
"It is an honour for me to be chosen to take part in something which has such an important place within the city and beyond."
Tickets for the York Mystery Plays, which will run from Thursday August 2nd to Monday August 27th, can be purchased online. Standard seats are priced at GBP20 for evenings and GBP15 for matinee shows.
Theatre-goers planning to book discount hotels in the city can browse a wide selection of accommodation at LateRooms.com, which recommends Cumbria House.
