DURHAM, NC, July 07, 2012 (Press-News.org) Renowned golf course architect Rees Jones and former United States Golf Association (USGA) President Jim Hyler will team up to reflect on the current, past and future of the game of golf Friday, July 6 at Old Chatham Golf Club. Jones and Hyler will discuss trends in golf course design and innovation that impact players of every skill level, to include the changeover to Champion Bermuda greens that many southern golf courses are implementing. The upcoming Ryder Cup, last weekend's AT&T Championship and The Fed Ex Tour Championship are all played on Rees Jones course redesigns.
Jones often is referred to as "the Open Doctor" due to the quantity of design and redesign work he has done for major championship venues including Torrey Pines Golf Course, Congressional Country Club, Bethpage State Park, Medinah Country Club, East Lake Golf Club, Redstone Golf Club and many more. Jones has designed or redesigned over 100 golf courses in his career. His remodeling skills have been applied to seven U.S. Open venues, seven PGA Championship courses, four Ryder Cup and two Walker Cup sites as well as the President's Cup at The Royal Montreal Golf Club.
Hyler has served as president of the USGA - which conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open - as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches. Hyler is a Raleigh native and founding member of Old Chatham Golf Club. He and Jones have worked together to host some of the most competitive golf tournaments in the United States. Hyler joined the USGA Executive Committee in 2004 and served four years as chair of the Championship Committee.
Old Chatham Golf Club is originally a Rees Jones design that is scheduled to reopen Friday, Aug. 31 from a course enhancement project overseen by the original architects. Course design improvements will include additional bunkers and undulation in greens and the installation of Champion Bermuda greens.
QUOTES:
"We are excited to bring Rees and Jim to speak with our members and to gain some insight from their knowledge of course design," said Allen Wilson, Old Chatham Golf Club president. "The gathering on Friday also will provide our members with the opportunity to hear what improvements will be made to our course directly from its designer so they can know what to expect."
