The Smarty Had A Party Intern Diaries

Elegant Disposable Dinnerware Company Kicks Off New Series of Funny Intern Mishaps

2012-07-21
ST. LOUIS, MO, July 21, 2012 (Press-News.org) With films such as "The Devil Wears Prada," Hollywood has transformed the typical intern's image into one of a coffee-fetching, career-driven, 'do anything' type of individual. That depiction led Smarty Had A Party, an online elegant disposable dinnerware retail store, to invent a hashtag labeled #alliwantedwasalatte that they use when sharing their intern's unfortunate blunders with their Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest fans. The #alliwantedwasalatte hashtag symbolizes the boss' frustration when an intern makes a hapless error while performing a task as simple as getting coffee. The idea was born the day Smarty's marketing intern, the marketing team's extra pair of hands for creating blog content, doing projects, and running errands was asked to go buy a package of plain yellow sticky notes. She returned with a tall rainbow tower of non-adhesive pieces of paper. All in good humor, Smarty employees, along with their intern started to discuss other careless or accidental intern mistakes and funny moments. They then posted a picture of the rainbow paper tower on Facebook with a brief explanation. Fans instantly began to 'like' and comment on the photo, either with sweet remarks in the intern's defense or harsh lines asking how she got hired. With so much enthusiasm from the fans, Smarty decided to post a weekly 'intern woe' on their social media pages in the form of a meme. Smarty created a standard image background of the intern herself, covered in 'plain yellow sticky-notes' that had written on them outrageous chores such as organizing the paperclips or doing the boss' son's book report. Each week, the text on the photo is changed and shared.

Fans continue to engage with Smarty on their #alliwantedwasalatte photos, but the story of the 'infamous rainbow tower' lives on as many comments are reminiscent of that first incidence. The tower became so popular that Smarty created a Facebook status stating that anyone interested could send them a message containing their mailing address and receive a handwritten love note on their color choice from the paper tower. Within two days, Smarty received over seventy requests. For the next week, the intern took time to write a completely original love note to every single person who asked for one. She even included confetti in each envelope, all made from the rainbow paper.

Theresa Jensen, Smarty Had A Party's commercial accounts representative, said, "We love getting personal with our fans by sharing with them all the funny moments that go on behind the scenes. Yes, we're a company, but we see our fans as part of the big ol' Smarty family."
