2012-08-24
CHICAGO, IL, August 24, 2012 (Press-News.org) On August 8, 2012, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) entered an order that would consolidate all current and future federally filed Pradaxa lawsuits (MDL No. 2385). The JPML selected Judge David R. Herndon, chief judge of the Southern District of Illinois, as the presiding judge.

Pradaxa litigation attorney Stephen D. Phillips, of Phillips Law Offices, explained that because so many cases have been filed over the drug's adverse effects (21 currently), centralization of the suits will make litigation more efficient and fair. It will eliminate duplicate discovery, prevent inconsistencies, and allow plaintiffs and their representatives to pool their resources.

The JPML selected Illinois for the litigation as it is a central and convenient location for both plaintiffs and defense nationwide.

Personal injury attorney Phillips stated, "With Chicago lawyers taking leading roles in the consolidated actions nationwide, it is no surprise that the JPML is recognizing the Southern District of Illinois as a practical forum for expeditious and fair pretrial proceedings and discovery."

Pradaxa is produced by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim and approved by the FDA in late 2010. The drug is meant to treat patients with the heart condition atrial fibrillation, and prescribed to prevent blood clots that can lead to strokes or heart attacks. The drug was produced to replace Warfarin, an older blood thinner. Both Warfarin and Pradaxa are known to cause hemorrhages. However, hemorrhaging on Warfarin can be stopped with Vitamin K. There is no reversal agent for hemorrhaging on Pradaxa.

Attorney Phillips urges anyone affected by Pradaxa to consult with his offices. The product litigation attorneys at Phillips Law Offices have a great deal of experience with Pradaxa cases, and are ready to answer any questions the public may have about this drug and its complications, Phillips said.
