The company's founders, Christine McDannell and Travis Harrup, each witnessed how great an effect online marketing can have on a business - something that led them to create this new venture. McDannell reflected on her experience prior to starting Social Starfish, "Especially during the recent recession, I focused 100% of my marketing time and budget into the online mediums, specifically social media, and the results were amazing. My company not only survived while many of my competitors were struggling to stay in business, we actually showed a ten percent growth during the worst economic downturn of the last 25 years." Harrup quickly echoed those sentiments, saying "my previous company's profits more than tripled during my tenure - something I would attribute almost entirely to our increased focus on growing our presence online and developing a loyal following of clients and customers via the internet".
Both believe strongly that the strategies they employed will work in any type of business due to the prevalence of social media in so many people's daily lives. "There are over 500 million active users on Facebook" Harrup says, "and they want to give business to companies that are visible, seem fun, and really 'get it' in regards to having a presence online".
