The Hamner Institutes' Dr. Mel Andersen Honored With The William And Eleanor Cave Award

Associate Director Receives Award From The Alternatives Research & Development Foundation At American Society For Cellular And Computational Toxicology Meeting

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, September 30, 2012 (Press-News.org) The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences (http://www.thehamner.org) has announced that Dr. Melvin Andersen, associate director of the Institute for Chemical Safety Sciences and Charles E. Hamner Jr. Distinguished Fellow, has received the Alternatives Research & Development Foundation's 2012 William and Eleanor Cave Award for achievements in advancing alternatives to the use of animals in research and testing (http://www.ardf-online.org/caveAward-2012.pdf). Andersen accepted the award at the American Society For Cellular and Computational Toxicology (ASCCT) meeting on Sept. 21 in Bethesda, Md., where he presented a plenary lecture titled "Computational Cellular Pathway Modeling: Combining Key In Vitro and In Silico Tools to Enhance Modern Safety Assessment."

As the associate director for the Institute for Chemical Safety Sciences, Andersen guides research directions, mentors staff and ensures the adequate reporting of results at The Hamner.
His current research interests are in the implementation of recommendations from the 2007 National Research Council report, "Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and A Strategy," to guide mode-of-action based human health risk assessments.

Board certified in industrial hygiene and in toxicology, Andersen is a fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences. He has served on numerous committees and advisory boards, including the Committee on Toxicity Testing and Assessment of Environmental Agents at the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Andersen is the author of 400 published papers and book chapters and has co-edited two books on quantitative modeling, Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetics:
Science and Applications in 2005 and Quantitative Modeling in Toxicology in 2010.
