YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, September 30, 2012 (Press-News.org) Step back in time and take in the atmosphere of the doom and gloom the poor unfortunate residents of the workhouse would have felt from the moment they stepped through the door.
"Hush-a-bye baby, on a tree top. When you grow old, your wages will stop. When you have spent the little you made. First to the poorhouse and then to the grave."...... This rhyme tells the story of many a working man's life in the 19th Century. The rather elegant building in Allhallowgate, standing in grounds graced with flower beds, trees, lilacs and even a passion flower, seems far removed from the dreaded Workhouse in Oliver Twist.
A feeling of doom or at best hopeless resignation must have fallen on many passing through the Gatehouse arch and hearing the door shut behind them. They knew they would leave only in the regulation coffin, 'with two handles, name of the person with the year of their decease inscribed'. Coffins were ordered in bulk.

Statute of Limitations for Certain Sex Crimes in Kansas Extended
2012-09-30
While many of us have heard the phrase "statute of limitations," we may not understand its legal meaning. Put simply, a statute of limitations prevents a legal cause of action from being brought after a certain number of years. The statute of limitations applies to the civil justice and criminal justice worlds, and the purpose behind the law is that individuals should be allowed to continue to live their lives without fear of litigation or prosecution after so much time has passed after an incident occurs. Recently, the statute of limitations in Kansas that applies ...
Kansas Court of Appeals Rules Recidivist Law for Sex Offenders Is Too Harsh
2012-09-30
The Kansas Court of Appeals recently ruled the imposition of lifetime post-release supervision for a sex offender who committed a low-grade felony is unconstitutional. The court compared the recidivist statutes for sex offenders to the corresponding rules for murderers and found "even murderers are not treated so harshly." With that finding, the court concluded that the lifetime post-release supervision of a young Kansas man violated the Eighth Amendment's protection from cruel and unusual punishment.
The court's ruling stems from a case that began in 2009. ...
Highway Safety Organization Adopts Stronger Distracted Driving Policy
2012-09-30
Most Indiana drivers have seen someone behind the wheel of a car, holding a cellphone and seemingly oblivious to much of what is going on around them. Some drivers would admit to engaging in this behavior themselves. Most people are probably not aware of the dangers of distracted driving and therefore are not motivated to improve their driving habits, but the Governors Highway Safety Association hopes to change that with a new policy on distracted driving.
Recently the GHSA adopted a new policy supporting a ban on handheld cellphone use for all drivers. Presently only ...

2012-09-30
D&J Sports is pleased to announce it now has the Swim Stuff swim parkas in stock. With the colder months approaching, it becomes even more important for swimmers to keep warm on the sidelines. Heading into the water and then spending time outside the pool between races and practice sessions can be frigid, even when the temperatures aren't too cold. With the use of these swim parkas, swimmers are able to enjoy warmth without having to go into the locker room and get dressed. This is especially important if they will be getting back into the pool again.
The Swim Stuff ...
