WALPOLE, MA, October 03, 2012 (Press-News.org) GEF and Cabot Creamery Cooperative have teamed up to promote sustainability education and healthy behaviors in elementary and middle schools through their new Holiday Cheese Party Raffle. By completing a lesson on health and sustainability, classrooms from around the nation are eligible to win a nutritious party with $100 from GEF and Cabot's award winning cheddar cheeses.
To participate, teachers or youth group leaders must complete at least one part of the free, three-part lesson, Wonder Wheel! Food for Healthy Kids and a Healthy World, and submit their review of the lesson to GEF. Feedback can be submitted via email to service@greeneducationfoundation.org or on the lesson's page (www.greeneducationfoundation.org/wonderwheel) in GEF's online Sustainability Lesson Clearinghouse. Entries must be submitted between October 1 and November 30, 2012, and the winner will be notified on December 3, 2012. In the spirit of the health-focused lesson, GEF is providing the winner with $100 to use to supplement Cabot's award winning cheddar cheese with multi-grain crackers, grapes, apples and other snacks for a healthy holiday party.
This contest stems from the joint development of the free, three-part lesson for elementary and middle school students, Wonder Wheel! Food for Healthy Kids and a Healthy World. With this lesson, the two organizations addressed their shared vision for a healthier world through simple changes in everyday decision making. By educating youth on important sustainability concepts, such as how their food choices affect their health, their communities and their environment, the organizations empower students to become educated consumers and maintain healthy lifestyles.
Victoria Waters, CEO at GEF, shared her enthusiasm for this new raffle: "We're thrilled to be partnered with Cabot to offer a contest that not only encourages teachers to incorporate sustainability education in their classrooms, but also inspires students to pursue a lifetime of healthy habits."
Alexandra Groezinger, Food & Sustainability Education Programs Manager at Cabot Creamery, adds: "As a cooperative, we believe in supporting our communities, and in that spirit, we are thrilled to team up with GEF to support children (and adults!) in making healthier choices that support personal wellness while supporting local communities and the planet."
The lesson includes interactive, engaging activities to connect the educational concepts with tangible experiences and real-life examples. For instance, students will participate in activities that include making cottage cheese, performing skits about cooperatives, and participating in a food pack¬age redesign competition. At the end of the lesson, students will design and create their own "Wonder Wheels" depicting healthy food choices. Teachers may download all the resources necessary for this lesson including a teacher guide, student guide, and classroom presentation, from GEF's website at http://www.greeneducationfoundation.org/wonderwheel. To join the contest, teachers must complete at least one part of the three part lesson.
