Bayer CropScience Recognized For Global, Local Sustainability Efforts

Bayer CropScience Receives Highest Possible Score By Carbon Disclosure Project And Finalist Designation From Triangle Business Journal

2012-10-27
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, October 27, 2012 (Press-News.org) Addressing today's most pressing global challenges with the head of a scientist and heart of a farmer is one of Bayer CropScience's specialties. Ongoing efforts recently led to recognition on global and local green initiatives from both the Carbon Disclosure Project and the Triangle Business Journal.

Cultivating a green culture led the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) to recognize Bayer CropScience as a global leader in contributing to climate protection and addressing the problems posed by climate change. The company received the highest possible score on CDP's 2012 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) and was classified as "Band A" in the Carbon Performance Leadership Index (CPLI). These indices appraise the world's largest publicly traded companies on their carbon management and energy efficiency, as well as efforts to reduce global emissions. For more information on the CDP, visit http://www.cdproject.net.

"Bayer CropScience was one of only a very small number of companies to receive maximum scores in the CDP's assessments," said Dr. Nick Hamon, head of sustainability for Bayer CropScience North America. "We do not just talk about reducing climate change by increasing sustainability efforts - we put our words into action. Bayer is reducing the environmental footprint of its business operations around the world, with a focus on lowering emissions and leaving the next generation with a healthier planet. The CDP rankings are the result of a systematic and continuous focus on an open dialogue about promoting green initiatives and reducing our carbon footprint."

Bayer CropScience's local sustainability efforts were honored by Triangle Business Journal in the publication's 2012 Clean & Green Awards, recognizing those in the Triangle who have demonstrated a commitment to implementing environmentally sustainable practices in their businesses and communities. The company was awarded a finalist designation for various educational projects and outreach, including the Making Science Make Sense workshop series, where elementary school teachers are equipped with tools to encourage scientific literacy among students, collaborating with NC State University on creating an executive education workshop on sustainability for thought leaders in the agriculture and urban landscape arena, and more. For more information on the awards and a full list of finalists, visit http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/event/64521.

"We are committed to developing feasible, long-term solutions for promoting sustainability in the greater Triangle community and around the world," said Hamon. "The need for creating a healthier environment both locally and globally is at the heart of our efforts in agricultural innovation. With Bayer CropScience's research, development, educational and community involvement efforts, we hope to be a model for citizens and companies alike in being clean and green thought leaders."
