Don't Block the Box: Avoid a Citation for Blocking an Intersection

"Blocking the box," or blocking an intersection, is a state law violation that can be avoided with a little attention to the road.

Don't Block the Box: Avoid a Citation for Blocking an Intersection
2013-01-21
SCHENECTADY, NY, January 21, 2013 (Press-News.org) Few things are more frustrating - when it comes to driving - than seeing that green light ahead while you are stuck in traffic, unmoving.

The culprit is "blocking the box," and it typically occurs when a driver pulls into an intersection despite it being unlikely that he or she will be able to proceed through before the light turns red.

What many readers in Schnectady County and elsewhere in the state of New York might not know is that this practice is a violation of New York traffic laws.

What the Law Says

Paragraph 1175 of the New York's traffic law covers obstructing traffic at an intersection. It notes that when traffic going your direction is at a standstill on the far side of the intersection, you are not allowed to drive your car into the intersection.

An exception to the rule is when you're making a turn. You are allowed to pull your vehicle into the intersection and wait for a break in traffic (or for traffic to stop because it has a red light), and then complete the turn. However, only one vehicle at a time is allowed to do this.

New York City's Twist on the Law

You can be cited for blocking an intersection anywhere in New York, but when you're traveling in New York City, the law is slightly different. NYC decided a few years ago to classify blocking the box as a parking violation (because your vehicle is stopped, after all).

This was done so that the city's traffic agents, who are not sworn police officers, could also cite drivers for violating the law. New York City also made the fine $115, a little over the state minimum of $90.

What You Can Do

Virtually everyone has made the mistake of entering an intersection and being stuck there until the light changes. The best way to avoid a "blocking the box" violation is to be constantly aware of traffic conditions while driving. (This means, among other things, that your mobile phone or tablet should be stashed away.)

Drivers who are paying attention are more likely to notice that traffic is stopped ahead or that there are signs indicating you're approaching a construction zone, for example. Also, don't feel any pressure to enter the intersection just because there are other cars behind you -- those drivers can wait, and they won't be lining up to pay your fine if you get ticketed.

No matter the circumstances, anyone who has been cited for a traffic violation should be aware of one's rights to a defense in a court of law.

Payday Loans Firms To Be Investigated By Office Of Fair Trading, Says Scottishtrustdeed.co.uk
2013-01-21
The move by the consumer watchdog comes following a growing number of concerns from MPs and debt campaigners about how the easy availability of high interest loans is pushing individuals into a vicious debt cycle from which they find it almost impossible to get out of. Payday loans are a multi-billion pound industry in the UK and grew rapidly when the concept was first introduced from the US a few years ago. Scotland in particular has the highest level of payday loans in the UK, and the OFT is now beginning to scrutinise how they are being sold. Under the Consumer ...

Loneliness, like chronic stress, taxes the immune system

2013-01-20
COLUMBUS, Ohio – New research links loneliness to a number of dysfunctional immune responses, suggesting that being lonely has the potential to harm overall health. Researchers found that people who were more lonely showed signs of elevated latent herpes virus reactivation and produced more inflammation-related proteins in response to acute stress than did people who felt more socially connected. These proteins signal the presence of inflammation, and chronic inflammation is linked to numerous conditions, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis ...

From bullying to relationships: Mapping our online communications

2013-01-20
January 19, 2013 – New Orleans – When we typically think of kids who are the victims of school bullying, what comes to mind are isolated youth who do not fit in. A new study, however, shows that when that harassment occurs online, the victims tend to be in mainstream social groups at the school – and they are often friends or former friends, not strangers. The research is part of a burgeoning field of study into the effects of social media on everyday relationships and behavior. Personality and social psychologists are finding surprising ways in which people's online ...

Wind in the willows boosts biofuel production

Wind in the willows boosts biofuel production
2013-01-20
Willow trees cultivated for 'green energy' can yield up to five times more biofuel if they grow diagonally, compared with those that are allowed to grow naturally up towards the sky. This effect had been observed in the wild and in plantations around the UK, but scientists were previously unable to explain why some willows produced more biofuel than others. Now British researchers have identified a genetic trait that causes this effect and is activated in some trees when they sense they are at an angle, such as where they are blown sideways in windy conditions. The ...
