Conductor Points To Awards Season Fav Les Miserables As Front-runner In Music Education
Tom Hooper's film version of much-loved musical highlights need for increased musical knowledge.
LEXINGTON, VA, February 07, 2013
The awards season is firmly upon us, with shiny trophies being handed out for the various musical and cinematic achievements of the past year. But this year, the two realms have been merged, with the much-beloved musical, Les Miserables, finding its way to the big screen. It's won the hearts of many, including conductor and author Barry Kolman, who feels the film does a great service in reminding the public the importance of understanding the craft and theory behind making wonderful music.Kolman, who recently penned an important tool for music lovers and musicians—The Language of Music Revealed--recognized immediately how impossible the task of translating the Broadway musical to film would be to someone unable to read music.
"Even though the music had been written long ago, Tom Hooper [the director] has admitted how important knowing how to read music was to filming this ground-breaking musical. He had to be able to read and understand the score completely in order to know how it could be filmed and, of course, edited; the score and story of the film are inseparable."
This fact underscores the reasons why Kolman set about writing his book, to help the millions of self-taught musicians out there precisely how the language of music 'works'.
"For me, what Hooper has said about the production highlights how important being able to read music is as a form of communication. It's not just for conductors and classical performers—it's important for anyone involved with music or musicians. And really, it's the only true 'universal language' that exists! And it's a language that I'm eager to teach to everyone."
Barry Kolman is the renowned conductor of the Shenandoah Symphony Orchestra. As guest conductor, he has led the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Hunan Philharmonic, and Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, among many others.
The Language of Music Revealed is published by Universal Press and provides step-by-step instruction for all those interested in reading and writing music.
