OTTAWA, ON, CANADA, February 15, 2013 (Press-News.org) Winners of the Defining Moments youth art program will be at Winterlude this weekend, courtesy of TakingITGlobal and the National Capital Commission (NCC), to share their perspective as young Canadian artists and celebrate the culmination of Defining Moments after two years of engaging youth from coast to coast.

Representatives from the federal government, the youth sector, and the art community will come together for an award ceremony on Saturday, February 16th from 3 to 5 pm. The prestigious National Gallery will be the setting for this event, which will honour the 26 young artists who were handpicked by the jury, as the standouts from over 700 submissions to the Defining Moments online global gallery. "We are delighted to host this event to highlight the outstanding contributions to the Defining Moments art collection, and further the dialogue on art and Canadian identity," says Jennifer Corriero, Executive Director of TakingITGlobal.

On Sunday, February 17th from noon to 3 pm, 13 of the contest's 26 winners will hold a meet-and-greet at the Defining Moments outdoor exhibit in Confederation Park designed by the NCC. This diverse group of young artists, hailing from 8 provinces and territories, will be on-site to interact with the public and share their artistic perspective on being a youth in Canada today.

Over the last two years, Defining Moments: Discovering Our Canadian Stories has engaged youth across Canada in exploring their sense of Canadian identity through art. Operated by TakingITGlobal with support from Canadian Heritage, Defining Moments offered workshops and held exhibits in every province and territory. Over 700 works of art were submitted to the program's online global gallery, forming an impressive collection of artwork showcasing the perspective of young Canadians. A jury selected 26 winners that were included in a traveling exhibit that toured the country, displayed in locations from the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse, to the Eastern Edge Gallery in St. John's, Newfoundland.
