KLAS Diagnoses EMR Usability Concerns

Report highlights lack of acute care EMR usability from the provider's point of view.

OREM, UT, March 19, 2013 (Press-News.org) Fueled by provider requests and the pending meaningful use Stage 2 requirements, KLAS completes their study into clinical usability of leading EMRs. After months of research, the report, entitled Acute Care EMR Usability 2013, Beyond Counting Clicks, published earlier today.

"Provider requests for this data have been steadily increasing," said Colin Buckley, report author. "The overarching question providers want answered is which EMR best supports efficient and effective patient care. This report answers that question and finds that there is more to usability than just how many mouse clicks a task takes."

In an effort to balance the needs of user friendliness and individual physician efficiency with organizational goals for quality of care, the report targeted CMIOs and other physician leadership. The EMRs included in the study include Allscripts, Cerner, Epic, McKesson Paragon, MEDITECH v.6, and Siemens Soarian. The report examined overall EMR usability as well as the systems' performance during the execution of various commonplace tasks.
