CHARLESTON, SC, March 27, 2013 (Press-News.org) Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina organized and ran an estate planning and wills clinic for the Dorchester Habitat For Humanity in Summerville, SC on Saturday February 9th 2013. The event was sponsored by the Habitat Wills Committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar. This is one of many wills clinics that the Young Lawyers Division puts together at Habitat sites throughout the state of South Carolina. The main of goal of the clinic is to provide homeowners of Habitat for Humanity with estate planning documents of a simple last will and testament along with advance directive papers of a living will or declaration of desire of natural death and a healthcare power of attorney. The need of a basic will is great for homeowners going through the program because if the homeowner were to die then without a will many people in a family could potentially own the house and there is a greater chance that the house will be sold and not remain in the family. A simple will ensures that the home can pass to the heirs that the homeowner chooses and not those that the state of South Carolina chooses. A simple will can make the probate court process much simpler than in the absence of a will.
Advance health care directives are also important documents that the clinic helps to provide to homeowners. A living will helps to make end of life decisions easier for family members because the person that makes it puts their health wishes in a written from and removes the choice to be having to made by family members left behind. A healthcare power of attorney allows an agent to be appointed to make health care decisions in case the person that makes the document is no longer able to speak for themselves. There were several volunteers that included young lawyers from throughout the state as well as law students, college students, and paralegal students. Homeowners were scheduled for an appointment and were able to walk out of the clinic with fully completed and executed estate planning documents. This is the second year in a row that attorney Evan Guthrie ran and organized the clinic for Dorchester Habitat. Mr. Guthrie was glad to be back and to be able to give back to the community that he lives and works in. Attorney looks forward to being able to come back again in the following year and participate in the clinic again.
