PEORIA, AZ, May 01, 2013 (Press-News.org) Summer is fast approaching, which means swimming for many families in Arizona. Pool covers are being peeled away, and chemical and salt levels are being balanced in preparation for the upcoming months of water entertainment. Most people will spend multiple afternoons cooling off in the water in an attempt to escape the summer heat. Not only are aquatic activities great for keeping cool, they are excellent for improving physical and mental health regardless of age. No wonder they're so popular! Unfortunately, popularity does not equate to safety, so a collection of organizations and independent companies are working to bring National Water Safety Month to the public.
May is National Water Safety Month. It is the product of a partnership between the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP), the American Red Cross, the National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA) and the World Waterpark Association (WWA), and companies and governments are joining in the cause. National Water Safety Month is a public education and awareness campaign with the mission to bring "safe, enjoyable aquatic activities to the American public, from home pools and spas to waterparks and resorts, to public swimming and water recreation facilities," as stated on the official website. A large part of this mission is to educate individuals and organizations on how to make aquatic activities safer for swimmers, parents, children, lifeguards, and anyone else who participates. According to the Center for Disease Control, about ten people die every day from unintentional drowning unrelated to boating, so learning how to improve the safety around water is an important cause. In Arizona, the most typical water activity is enjoying time in a backyard pool; so providing information and resources for how to keep children and others safe is an important public health goal for the state.
There are a number of steps that can improve the safety of a backyard pool. Teaching children to swim at an early age, staying close while the pool is in use, and keeping a first aid kit on hand are just a few of the common sense precautions for any homeowner to take. However, having the appropriate equipment installed is not only an important safety measure - it is often the law. In Arizona, state regulations require that a swimming pool "be protected by an enclosure (wall, fence, or barrier) that surrounds the pool area." There are also safety requirements pertaining to the construction of enclosures as well as gates for pools. Take a moment to read through these requirements at the Arizona Department of Health Services website.
