ROANOKE, VA, March 21, 2014 (Press-News.org) VIRginia International Raceway is hosting an Open House and Charity Laps event to benefit Victory Junction, a year-round camping environment for children ages six to 16 with chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses. Funds raised from the March 28 event will directly support the Randleman, N.C.-based nonprofit in its efforts to provide life-changing camping experiences in a medically sound environment at no cost to campers or their families.
For each donation of just $25, guests can drive their own cars on VIR's historic 3.27-mile full course for 15 minutes. In addition, all facilities at VIR, including the kart track, skeet shooting courses, the spa and the Oak Tree Tavern, will be open for all to enjoy. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public. No advanced reservations are required and donations will be collected onsite the day of the event.
"We're honored to be able to partner with VIR again for this event," said Kyle Petty, co-founder of Victory Junction and former NASCAR driver. "It is great seeing car enthusiasts support Victory Junction through this special opportunity to drive on the historic road course. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are grateful for our generous donors who are giving seriously ill children an amazing summer camp experience."
This is the second annual VIR Open House and Charity Laps benefiting Victory Junction with last year's event raising more than $15,000 for the camp. The cost of sending one child to camp for one week is $2,500. However, through generous donations and events like the VIR Open House and Charity Laps, sick children and their families attend free of charge.
"Victory Junction does incredible things for children with serious illnesses and we're honored to be able to support them in any way we can," said Connie Nyholm, owner and CEO of VIR. "Providing open access to our track and facilities allows our fans to live out their racing dreams while supporting a great cause. We invite everyone to come out and join us for what will be a fun, family-friendly day."
Community members who drive during the event will be some of the first to experience the newly repaved track. During the offseason, VIR underwent several major renovations to update the facilities including repaving the entire track, widening it in several places and paving in the north paddock. This Open House and Charity Laps event will kick off a busy season for VIR that includes the Biscuitville 125 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and the newly formed TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, the result of last year's merger between the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and the American Le Mans Series, in its inaugural season, both taking place in August 2014.
