WICHITA, KS, April 10, 2014 (Press-News.org) Improper bite can bite back at a patient's oral health. Why? An irregular bite means the bottom and top teeth aren't properly aligned, which means a patient has an overbite or underbite. Mismatched teeth can be treated with orthodontics. And it's important to seek care because misaligned teeth can cause irritation for the jaw's temporomandibular joints (TMJ). And fixing the bite issue is the first step to fixing other indicators of malocclusion, such as spaced and crowded teeth.
"An improper bite and spacing issues can spell trouble for a patient's oral health. The primary reason orthodontic devices were invented was to treat the underlying effects of malocclusion, not for esthetic purposes. That's just a bonus of having straight teeth. For patients who want an esthetically pleasing treatment choice and effective treatment, Invisalign is an option to consider," says Dr. Mason, Wichita cosmetic dentist.
Invisalign treats a number of bite problems, including underbite, overbite and crossbite. The aligners are also invisible, which is a plus in many patients' books. It's also convenient that Invisalign is removable, so brush and flossing teeth is simpler.
If a patient has too many teeth erupted, he/she may need to get some teeth extracted before continuing orthodontic treatment. Spacing can be fixed as long as a patient completes his/her treatment course.
A properly aligned jaw and teeth makes it easier to clean between teeth and gumline; plus, fixed jaw movement will alleviate stress and irritation of TMJ.

Restorative Dental Treatment Helps Patients Achieve Long-Lasting Smiles
2014-04-10
When people think of health, they typically just think of general health, not the condition of the teeth and gums. Oral health is just as important as overall health because dental problems can negatively affect a patient's overall health.
Patients are instructed to brush and floss their teeth on a daily basis, and this is to keep plaque bacteria at bay. However, bad oral hygiene only spurs further bacteria growth and the development of acid, which eats away at tooth enamel.
Once tooth decay develops, a patient has already made a dent in his/her oral health. If a ...
