LONDON, ENGLAND, January 13, 2011 (Press-News.org) For Ilona Ludewig-Mack, the eureka moment happened in Paris. At a 2006 luxury industry congress, inspired by breakthroughs in sustainability and her family's history of organic farming in England, she envisioned a new niche for one of the world's oldest and most popular manufactured materials.
In 2009 Ludewig-Mack launched Natureally Organic Leather, one of the only leather makers in the world that can account for its products from point of origin to consumer.
The London-based company exclusively uses certified organic rare breed cattle hides from select farms in the U.K. known for the pedigree, health and humane treatment of the livestock. Their environmentally safe vegetable tanning process is derived from centuries-old methods. The ultra-premium finished hides are never varnished or coated, resulting in an heirloom-quality material coveted by designers of high-end fashion products.
Ludewig-Mack is now looking for U.S. partners in footwear, accessories, home furnishings and other categories to introduce her unique brand of ethical luxury to American consumers.
"The extra care we take to be environmentally sustainable is precisely what makes our leather so desirable," Ludewig-Mack said. "As in Europe, American consumers embrace brands that value sustainability, and if you can do that in luxury, the response can be tremendous."
By contrast, the commoditization of the international leather industry has raised concerns over issues such as animal treatment and the widespread use of chrome-based chemical tanning processes.
"We had to return to the past in order to innovate," said Ludewig-Mack. "We're a small company that hopes to make a big statement by doing what we are inspired to do and creating something timeless."
