Adecco Group Teams Up with Canadian Paralympic Committee as a Partner in Delivering Career Counselling to Paralympic Athletes

Adecco signed a cooperation agreement to develop a career programme with the International Paralympic Committee in 2007. Canada is one of the first National Paralympic Committees to run this program.

2011-01-30
OTTAWA, ON, January 30, 2011 (Press-News.org) Today the Adecco Group, the global leader in HR services, began its partnership with the Canadian Paralympic Committee by presenting a career counselling session to the Canadian Men's Wheelchair Basketball Team. Adecco delivered its career workshop during the team's week-long selection camp, providing 20 Paralympic athletes with important information on how to leverage skills developed through sport when transitioning to the workplace.

"Being a high performance athlete for so many years, my sporting career has always been my focus. It can be distracting to think about what will come next," said Joey Johnson. "Hearing Adecco's presentation gave me confidence that with their help I can successfully transition to a professional career once I retire from sport. I am so pleased this service is available through the Canadian Paralympic Committee so that I can focus on winning a medal for Canada rather than worrying about what's next."

The programme, formally titled the CPC Athlete Career Programme is in cooperation with Adecco Group, and assists athletes in obtaining employment both throughout their training and at the end of their athletic pursuits. Adecco signed a cooperation agreement to develop the programme with the International Paralympic Committee in 2007 and officially re-launched the programme in 2009. Canada is one of the first National Paralympic Committees to run this program.

According to Patrick De Maeseneire, CEO of the Adecco Group, "It is often difficult for athletes to integrate into the world of work and business life. We provide the necessary education and training to help them prepare for this transition. The placements we offer enable them to find a suitable job or career path that they can follow with the same passion they brought to their sporting careers."

"While the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Team are focused on winning, it is important to understand the career challenges these athletes face once their focus moves towards their careers rather than their sport," said Henry Storgaard, CEO of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. "We are grateful to Adecco for taking the time to provide career counselling to our athletes before they retire from sport to help them prepare for their future career objectives."

Thanks to the Adecco and Canadian Paralympic Committee partnership, the CPC Athlete Career Programme is now offered free of charge and available to all Canadian Paralympians.
