Hotels-London.co.uk - Watteau's Drawings Offers a First for London

The first ever UK retrospective of Jean-Antoine Watteau's work is taking place in London this year.

2011-03-09
LONDON, ENGLAND, March 09, 2011 (Press-News.org) London will host the first ever UK retrospective of Jean-Antoine Watteau's sketched work this spring.

Watteau's Drawings will be housed in the Royal Academy of Arts and feature more than 80 pieces by the Frenchman.

According to the venue, his drawing ability is lauded among critics for its subtlety and "lightness of touch".

"Watteau is perhaps best known for his invention of a new genre: the fetes galantes, small pictures of social gatherings of elegant people in parkland settings," a representative from the gallery explained.

He used three chalks - black, white and red - to create his masterpieces.

Tickets for the display are priced at GBP10, with the venue showing the work from March 12th to June 5th 2011.

The closest tube station to the Royal Academy of Arts is Green Park, which is on the Piccadilly line.

Opening hours at the complex are from 10:00 to 18:00 GMT/BST every day except Friday, when the exhibition does not close until 22:00.
