LateRooms.com - Turner Painting Rough Sea with Wreckage Guests in Bilbao

The Turner painting Rough Sea with Wreckage has gone on display in Bilbao and will be on show until July 3rd 2011.

2011-04-20
BILBAO, SPAIN, April 20, 2011 (Press-News.org) The Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao has this week unveiled a new guest painting, which was painted by the English artist JMW Turner.

Rough Sea with Wreckage, created circa 1840 to 1845, is a moody and chaotic piece that could be based on the view seen from the shore at Margate, Kent.

The painting will be on show until July 3rd 2011 after being lent to the gallery by the Tate Britain.

"Turner was preoccupied with the sea throughout his career, filling about a third of his canvases with marine subjects, painting series of coastal views for publication and producing thousands of sketches and studies of the sea," explained documentalist at the UK venue Thomas Ardill on the official website.

What some fans of the artist may not be aware of is that Rough Sea with Wreckage is actually an unfinished piece, although this creates an added sense of mystery regarding what is taking place in the picture.

Admission to the museum costs EUR6 (GBP5.25), with the facility opening between 10:00 and 20:00 local time from Tuesday to Sunday.
