The Special Olympics World Games has been a continuing tradition since 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver first had the idea of Olympic Games for those with intellectual disabilities. Her goal was "to create a world that is not dominated by those who are excluded, but by those who are included."
The Special Olympics Hellas began as a non-profit educational and sports association for Greeks with intellectual disabilities in 1987. The Special Olympics has been an inspiring way to bring out the special qualities and abilities of individuals with disabilities through their participation in international sporting events. The goal has been to respect the diversity of those with intellectual disabilities by encouraging them to show they are equal members of society.
The success of the Special Olympics relies heavily on volunteers and Athens hotels will most likely fill up quickly near the start of the events. All participation and organisation costs are provided by private donations as well as by the state. Those wishing to volunteer should contact the Executive Committee of the Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011 directly.
