LateRooms.com - Head to Dusseldorf for the Biggest Funfair on the Rhine

The Biggest Funfair on the Rhine gets underway in Dusseldorf on July 15th.

2011-06-09
DUSSELDORF, GERMANY, June 09, 2011 (Press-News.org) People spending time in Dusseldorf next month will find a picturesque area on the banks of the River Rhine transformed into a huge fairground.

The Biggest Funfair on the Rhine is one of the German city's most popular annual events and attracts up to four million visitors.

Returning for its 110th edition this summer, the funfair is set to run from Friday July 15th to Sunday July 24th.

The fairground site is located in the borough of Oberkassel, which lies directly opposite Dusseldorf's central business district along the western bank of the Rhine.

Here, an area spanning 165,000 square metres is covered with towering roller coasters and other rides, amusement arcades, rows of beer tents and hundreds of food stalls.

Fairground operators from across Germany head to Dusseldorf for the event, which begins with a traditional opening ceremony and culminates in a spectacular fireworks display over the river.

The roots of the funfair can be traced back to the 1300s and a celebration held in honour of Apollinaris of Ravenna, the city's patron saint.

For visitors keen to learn more about this aspect of Dusseldorf's history, a shrine devoted to Saint Apollinaris can be found at the Church of St Lambertus in the Old Town.

The fairground site will be open from 14:00 local time each day during the week. On Saturday the rides start working at 13:00 and on Sunday the festivities begin at 11:00.

This year's fireworks display is due to take place on Friday July 22nd, with the pyrotechnics scheduled to get underway at about 22:30.

LateRooms.com recommends a large number of Dusseldorf hotel options that could appeal to holidaymakers, including the Relexa Hotel Ratingen City.
