What the mass public doesn't realize about the internet is there is a thing called affiliate marketing. This is where internet based companies offer a percentage of sales, or commonly known as commissions for putting their products and services in front of the faces of potential buyers to increase their sales. It's common practice and it's no different than a pushy salesman in your local retail store, it just has a different approach.
