City commissioner and attorney Keith Merritt will give a free consumer law lecture at 6 PM on Monday, July 23rd, at the Lakeland Public Library, Main Branch, 100 Lake Morton Dr.

Merritt Law Office, in conjunction with Florida Rural Legal Services, is sponsoring a free consumer law lecture on Monday, July 23rd at 6:00 PM. The lecture is located at the main branch of the Lakeland Public Library, 100 Lake Morton Dr.The lecture, "Filing For Bankruptcy: A Fresh Start," explains the bankruptcy process from the initial filing to the final discharge of debts. Mr. Merritt will explain the differences between a Chapter 7 and a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, what to expect during the filing, as well as alternatives to bankruptcy.
Also included is a discussion of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). "The federal law protects consumers from abusive debt collectors and unfair credit reporting," says Mr. Merritt. "Many people in debt don't know their rights. This law lays the groundwork for legal actions that can be taken against the collection agencies." Mr. Merritt will also answer any questions as time permits.
