JACKSON HEIGHTS, NY, November 30, 2012 (Press-News.org) Dr. Edwin Moreano, a board-certified facial cosmetic surgeon in Jackson Heights, NY and founder and director of Medical Mission of the World Foundation, nonprofit providing free reconstructive surgeries to children born with deformities, was recently recognized as a Latin Hero by the Univision Network. Moreano was honored with this recognition as a result of his work with the nonprofit he created to help children in impoverished regions in Latin America.
In the past 14 years, Moreano and his team of volunteers have completed mission trips to his native Quito, Ecuador's capital, and to the Cotui-La Vega region of the Dominican Republic. He has helped more than 3,000 children with conditions such as cleft lips and palates. It's these 3,000 smiles that earned Dr. Moreano this title of Latin Hero. Patients often travel long distances and stand in line for long periods of time in hopes of Dr. Moreano being able to help their child.
"I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to serve patients at my cosmetic surgery practice in Queens, but I also realize the great need for cosmetic surgeons in Latin America," said Dr. Moreano. "The high poverty rate in Latin America precludes many from getting the surgery they need to fix deformities from birth. It's awesome to have the opportunity to fix a child's cleft palate and give them a smile that brightens a room. This is my opportunity to give back, yet our mission teams receive something far greater during these trips. It is not recognition we seek, but it's incredibly humbling to be recognized by the Univision Network for this important work we do. "
