NEW YORK, NY, December 11, 2012 (Press-News.org) It is that time of year when we are all confronted with the problem of finding the perfect gift for important people in our lives. But if any of those 'difficult gift' folks are in recovery, the solution just became a little bit easier. BILL W. captures the inspiring life of the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, largely in his own words. Through rich archival audio recordings, Wilson narrates much of the film, telling his own story with a genuine warmth and deep understanding of alcoholism and his fellow alcoholics.
During his lifetime, Bill Wilson spoke to alcoholics in a way few others ever have. His voice may have a particular poignancy for them at this time of year, which can be especially tough. People in recovery sometimes joke that they suffer from a three-fold malady: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. It is no coincidence that many recovering addicts first seek sobriety in December or January, right in the midst of this season of indulgence and temptation - and often sadness and stress.
Many find hope in the promise of community that the holidays offer. And nowhere is a sense of community more on display than in the myriad 12 Step groups that offer a way out for those struggling with addiction - not only during this time of year, but all year long. BILL W., available on DVD and iTunes, is a very thoughtful gift for anyone in recovery - and for those who love them.
The documentary is the result of an eight-year collaboration between first-time filmmakers Dan Carracino and Kevin Hanlon. Asked why two non-alcoholics would spend so much time on this story, Dan Carracino explained, "Alcoholics Anonymous has something of an impossible riddle on its hands. They have a wonderful history, but because of their own public relations policy, there's a limit to how much of their own story they can tell, especially on film. That's why there's never been a documentary before, but it's a story the world needs to know. So we decided to tell it."
Kevin Hanlon adds this about the man who TIME Magazine named one of the100 Heroes and Icons of the 20th Century. "Bill Wilson was a truly remarkable individual who gets far too little credit for the amazing good he has brought into the world. Our hope is that the film will play a small part in rectifying that situation."
Since its initial release in May, BILL W. has filled theaters in the U.S. and Canada. It is now available on DVD from Page 124 Productions at page.124.com/store and on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and Movies On Demand (complete list of distributors below)* from FilmBuff. A spider's life can't help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone's life can stand a little of that."
