RALEIGH, NC, February 14, 2013 (Press-News.org) Dean Ogan, owner of Rocky Top Hospitality (http://www.rockytophospitality.com/), has announced that The Daily Planet Cafe will host two science cafe discussions during the month of February, with focuses on the pursuit of scientific discoveries and understanding the human-canine relationship. Each of these events will be led by experts in their respective fields and will conclude with a Q&A session in which the audience is encouraged to ask specific questions to learn more.
The first talk, entitled "Ignorance," will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. and will be led by Stuart Firestein, Ph.D., chairman of the department of biological sciences at Columbia University. Dr. Firestein will discuss his recently released book "Ignorance: How it Drives Science," in which he evaluates the idea that pursuing research based on what we do not know is more valuable than building on our present knowledge of the world. A published author with Wired, Huffington Post, and Scientific American, Firestein will engage participants in this discussion addressing the pursuit of scientific discoveries and the most effective approach to enhancing knowledge.
The cafe will later host a discussion centered on further examining the human-canine relationship and evaluating how man and dog have progressed over the centuries. "The Genius of Dogs" program will be held on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. with the discussion led by Brian Hare, Ph.D., founder and director of the Duke Canine Cognition Center and associate professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University. Alongside science cafe participants, Dr. Hare will delve into current research on canine intelligence and where the species is headed in the future.
QUOTES:
"We look forward to the science cafe discussions each month, as they bring new topics and issues to the forefront of our local community conversations," said Ogan. "This month's discussions on how we address future scientific discoveries, as well as the untapped scientific relationship between humans and canines, is sure to be an eye opener for our participants."
