In a report in Energy Digital, Don Coates, the Mayor of the Town of Bracebridge (www.bracebridge.ca) discusses how their town continues to work toward energy efficiency and their methods for capital investments in infrastructure and public use facilities.

The Town of Bracebridge was founded in 1875 and today, more than 16,000 people take residency in the area. The rural town was built around a waterfall on the Muskoka River and the area is rich in culture, community, arts and natural beauty. The Town's other claim to fame is that it established Canada's first ever water power generating plant in 1894 to supply hydro-electric power to the community. Additionally, since 2001, the town's population has risen 25 percent, making it the highest in the entire Muskoka province.

"We've also been affected by the losses in the automobile industry and we went into a convergence community adjustment and strategic plan that was implemented by the city council, the public and our business communities," Coates says. "We're moving ahead as a community now and we've had some major economic improvements in the last two years."
