Margaret B. Pollard Middle School Receives LEED Gold Certification

Local School Designed By SfL+a Architects Serves As A Learning Tool For Students

2012-08-22
RALEIGH, NC, August 22, 2012 (Press-News.org) SfL+a Architects (http://www.sfla.biz) has announced that Margaret B. Pollard Middle School in Chapel Hill, N.C. has received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable building design and construction. The first Gold Certified LEED for Schools 2007 middle school in North Carolina, Margaret B. Pollard Middle School was constructed with specific attention to sustainability and environmental friendliness, as well as classroom acoustics, natural daylight and numerous high performance energy features. The 117,215-square-foot building serves 650 students and contains spaces available for public use. The building incorporates a ground-source geothermal mechanical system; high-output, dimmableT-5 lights; a solar hot water pre-heat system; and spray foam insulation in the exterior wall cavity to reduce energy loss through air infiltration. Margaret B. Pollard Middle School will be hosting an open house and LEED plaque presentation on Tuesday, August 21 at 5 p.m. at the school, located at 185 Granite Mill Blvd. in Chapel Hill.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a certification of distinction that provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community has been designed and constructed to encourage human and environmental health through water conservation, energy efficiency, sustainable building materials and adherence to indoor environmental quality. In order to meet LEED Gold Certification under LEED for Schools 2007, a school must earn 44 to 57 out of 79 possible points. For more information on the LEED certification process and LEED for schools, visit http://www.usgbc.org.

QUOTES:
"LEED Gold certification for Margaret B. Pollard Middle School means more than receiving recognition for constructing a sustainable building," said Robbie Ferris, president and CEO of SfL+a Architects. "It also means that students and teachers will reap the benefits of an educational facility that can serve as a learning tool that emphasizes the value of protecting our environment through innovative measures."

DETAILS:
- Margaret Pollard Middle School earned a total of 46 points to achieve LEED Gold Certification.
- The wastewater system was designed so that all water used in the building is treated and used for landscape irrigation within the local community, eliminating the use of potable water for irrigation.
