SAN DIEGO, CA, May 23, 2012 (Press-News.org) For Richard Shea, Vice-President of Alabama-based specialty contractor Morris-Shea Bridge Co., the decision to manage the juggernaut company's steadily growing operations was an easy one. After his father started the business in 1969 in cooperation with a partner, Shea had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs from a young age. Once he'd graduated from college, his father had bought out his partner and owned the business outright.
After that, "he made me an offer I couldn't refuse," says Shea with a grin. Given Morris-Shea's record of steady growth and high-profile projects, it's safe to say it was a win-win situation for all concerned. "It worked out pretty well," he acknowledges wryly.
By now, Shea knows that any business that's had the success Morris-Shea has had understands that the people have to come first - and Shea's company is no exception.
"We treat our staff more like partners than employees," he says. "We take good care of our folks. We keep them busy, and we make sure that when they're between jobs, they get some time with family. You know, you treat them well, they treat you well. I mean, if it wasn't for the people in the field doing the work, we wouldn't have the reputation that we've got."
"There's a good old saying: 'You're only as good as your worst man.' Well, we try not to have one."
